Barry was speaking from Genesis 1:26-31 on the subject of 'Wired to Work' and he talked about how if we are made in Gods image then, like God, we are made to work. God has a job, in that not only did He create the world and everything around us, but we see in John 5:17 that God is always at His work; and therefore so should we be.
Barry took us through the passage in Genesis, talking about how work was created for Adam and Eve, it was not easy work but it only became painful after the fall. This shows us that when we're not working in partnership with God, things are going to get more difficult.
Barry went on to say that when we look at the scriptures, it is as much included that we should be working that we should also rest; 'Six days you shall work, but the seventh is a Sabbath' (Exodus 20: 9-10). For that reason we should work as if we are working for the Lord in everything we do. That doesn't just mean working for a church, but treating every job we have whether it's working for a bank, doing an assignment for uni or cleaning the kitchen we should work enthusiastically and to the best of our ability.
Barry continued by saying that, in the same vein, we do need to be wary of idleness. Paul would work day and night when he visited a church to set the right example, because when we aren't working that is the time when we are often tempted into sinning.
Barry finished his talk by addressing the issue of those who maybe can't work or think they have done their time. To those who are currently unable to work, that is the reason the rest of us work; to support and encourage those who do. And to those who are retired? Barry addressed them saying that being retired is a great opportunity to use their new found time for The Kingdom. Ultimately that is what we should all be working for; in any and all of our places of work is to see the kingdom come in small and big ways and to see people becoming disciples of Jesus.
It was fantastic to have Adam Norton with us as well as we welcomed him onto the staff team as the new Youth Worker and commissioned him as he starts working with the young people of York.
We were led by Lee and Ben and Andy Barthow led us in sung worship.
